Tottenham are interested in signing Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on a free transfer this summer, according to the Sun.

Johnstone is currently on loan at Championship side Aston Villa, the seventh loan club of his career.

The 25-year-old seemingly has no future at Manchester United, and Spurs are apparently interested in signing him for nothing when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Mauricio Pochettino could be in need of a new back-up goalkeeper with Michel Vorm also out of contract this summer.

There has been no indication 34-year-old Vorm will sign an extension, meaning Tottenham will be without a reliable deputy for Hugo Lloris next term.

While Johnstone would provide capable back-up, some fans think the club should be targeting a goalkeeper who can challenge Hugo Lloris for the No.1 shirt.

Lloris has made a number of high-profile mistakes in recent months, but I don’t think Spurs will be able to find a stopper of a similar standard without breaking the bank.

With that in mind, Johnstone makes sense as a summer target.
