Tottenham are interested in signing Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles this summer, according to the London Evening Standard.

The defender, who has also been linked with Chelsea in recent months, was arguably Newcastle’s standout player during the 2017-18 season.

Spurs are in need of a centre-back, with Toby Alderweireld expected to leave in the coming weeks after failing to agree terms on a new contract.

Manchester United are believed to be interested in Alderweireld, but Tottenham will reportedly ask for £75 million if they are to sell the Belgian.

Matthijs de Ligt is said to be Spurs’ number one target to replace Alderweireld – Tottenham hope their “strong connections” with Ajax will help lure the teenager to north London despite interest from Manchester City.

But the Standard claims Spurs are also keen on Lascelles, likely as an alternative to De Ligt if a deal can’t be done for the Dutchman.

Mauricio Pochettino has worked wonders with young English players in the past, and 24-year-old Lascelles could be the latest in a long line to thrive under the Argentinian’s management.

However, there is no indication Tottenham have acted on their interest in Lascelles yet. They are only likely to do so if a deal for De Ligt proves impossible.
