Manchester United are ready to pay Tottenham £40 million for Mauricio Pochettino to replace Jose Mourinho, according to the Sun.

It is believed United won’t have to pay Mourinho any compensation if he misses out on the top four, making it far easier to sack the Portuguese coach at the end of the season.

And the Sun claims Pochettino is United’s only candidate to replace Mourinho.

However, the Red Devils will have to pay £40m to buy Pochettino out of his contract, which he renewed over the summer.

Pochettino was heavily linked with the Real Madrid post at the start of the season, but the champions of Europe hired Julen Lopetegui instead.

The 46-year-old is apparently keen to lead Spurs into their new stadium, a move that should happen in January or February.

But United and Madrid are likely to be keen on Pochettino in the summer if they are both in need of new managers.

Whether the Argentinian will be eager to jump ship remains to be seen.

  1. Gee, I hope not. Pocchetino is reasonably successful for an also-ran; that’s all. MUFC is arguably the biggest club in the world. We can’t have Guardiola but we can still aim higher than this, surely!
How about Zidane or Gerrard – two guys who will want to reach the pinnacles of success.
