Eric Dier has a ‘slim chance’ of playing for Tottenham against Manchester United on Sunday, according to the London Evening Standard.

The midfielder has been out of action since December after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix.

The Standard claims Dier has now returned to training and could face United in the Premier League this weekend. If not, he will almost certainly be available for a run of five matches in 14 days after the United clash.

Mauricio Pochettino has mostly selected a midfield diamond in recent weeks, with Harry Winks usually sitting at the base – which is where Dier would usually play.

It will be interesting to see if Winks keeps his place in the team when Dier returns. Pochettino rarely drops Dier when he is fit enough to play.

The 24-year-old’s performances were mixed in the first half of the season. There is an argument to be made that Spurs are a better attacking side without him in the team.

However, the back four has lacked support from the midfield over the festive period, and Tottenham looked exposed against Chelsea on Tuesday despite keeping a clean sheet.
