Tottenham are close to completing the signing of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes, according to reports in Portugal.

Earlier this week, we relayed a story suggesting Spurs are looking at Fernandes as an alternative to Giovani Lo Celso, who is proving difficult to capture.

Both players are said to have £88 million release clauses in their contracts, and the Portuguese media appears to suggest Tottenham are leaning towards Fernandes right now.

Via Sport Witness, outlet A Bola claims Manchester United are prepared to pay more than the £60.5 million Spurs are willing to part ways with in order to convince Sporting to sell.

But another publication, Record, believes Tottenham are closing in on the signing of Fernandes after making it clear they can afford to pay at least £62 million for the 24-year-old – in fact a transfer is said to be ‘very close’.

Fernandes scored 32 goals and provided 18 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions this season, so it’s not difficult to see why he is being chased by two of England’s big six.

It looks like Spurs will have to smash their transfer record to get him, and it’s probably unlikely the Londoners will sign both Fernandes and Lo Celso in the same window given their valuations.
