Lyon have turned down an offer of more than £40 million for Tanguy Ndombele from Tottenham Hotspur, according to reports in Italy.

Yesterday we relayed a story suggesting Spurs are closing in on the the signing of Ndombele for a club record fee.

However, it now seems those reports were premature with Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio revealing Tottenham’s first bid for the midfielder has been rejected.

It is believed Spurs offered €45 million plus bonuses, which works out at £40 million plus add-ons that could take it closer to the £50 million mark.

What’s more, Juventus are said to have met Lyon to ask about Ndombele, meaning Tottenham could face competition from a European giant.

This was bound to happen. Ndbombele is one of the most sought after midfielders in Europe, so interest from other big clubs is likely to emerge in the coming weeks.

It will be a huge coup if Spurs manage to beat the Frenchman’s other suitors to his signature. Real Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United have also been linked.

Now we play the waiting game.
