Sporting Lisbon star and Tottenham target Bruno Fernandes is closing in on a move to Real Madrid, according to the Mirror and reports in Portugal.

Over the weekend we relayed quotes from Fernandes, who revealed he had all but agreed to join Spurs before the English transfer window closed but Sporting turned down the club’s offer. It is believed the Londoners were not willing to meet the £64 million asking price and so instead they signed Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis on deadline day.

Manchester United were also apparently chasing Fernandes throughout the summer, but now the Mirror claims Real Madrid are close to signing the 24-year-old before today’s European transfer deadline. ESPN Portugal are reporting the same thing, suggesting the rumours could very much be legitimate.

Whether Tottenham were planning on going back in for Fernandes in January is unclear. It did seem like a case of Fernandes or Lo Celso in the summer, unless Christian Eriksen left – which didn’t happen before the English deadline and doesn’t look like happening today.

Of course, there is a chance Eriksen will depart in January, but if the Fernandes story is to be believed, the Portugal international will not be the Dane’s mid-season replacement.
