Tottenham have been handed the chance to sign Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes, according to the Guardian.

Gedson, who has made 13 appearances across all competitions this season, has been heavily linked with West Ham in recent days. The Guardian claims the Hammers are attempting to sign Gedson on an 18-month loan but now face competition from Spurs.

The report suggests the 21-year-old’s new agent, Jorge Mendes, has contacted Tottenham to offer his client to the Londoners. However, it is unclear whether Spurs will act on the proposal.

Tottenham fans will hope the club does act. Jose Mourinho’s squad is currently wearing thin in midfield, with Moussa Sissoko sidelined until April with a knee injury and Tanguy Ndombele currently struggling with a hip problem.

Even if those players were fit, Spurs arguably are in need of a new defensive midfielder to partner either Ndombele, Sissoko or Harry Winks. Eric Dier has been used regularly by Mourinho but continues to look rusty.

Chelsea have also been linked with Gedson by Sky Sports, so it will interesting to see how the saga unfolds in the coming days.
