Gareth Bale said he thinks Tottenham can be “very competitive” this season after scoring the winner in Sunday night’s narrow victory over Brighton.

The Welshman came off the bench and bagged the first goal of his second spell with Spurs since returning to the club on loan from Real Madrid.

It was a moment of relief for Bale who has failed to make an impact so far, primarily because he arrived with an injury and has been working to build his match fitness.

The 31-year-old missed a huge chance to secure the points in last month’s 3-3 draw with West Ham United and has only featured intermittently since.

But his excellent header from Sergio Reguilon’s cross against Brighton showed the kind of impact he can make in Tottenham’s front line.

And Bale himself believes the Londoners can achieve big things this season after moving up to second in the Premier League table.

When asked just how competitive Spurs can be this term, Bale told Sky Sports: “Very competitive. We know not to get carried away – it’s a long season – but we’ll keep working as hard as we can.”

Bale will likely be in the starting line-up when Tottenham face Ludogorets in the Europa League on Thursday – it will then be interesting to see if he makes his first league start against West Brom.
