Tottenham have held initial talks to sign Stuttgart winger Nicolas Gonzalez, according to the Athletic.

Gonzalez, a 22-year-old Argentina international, has scored five goals in 10 Bundesliga appearances so far this season and has found the net twice in five caps for his country.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein – always reliable when it comes to transfers – claims Spurs and Juventus are both in early discussions with Stuttgart over a possible deal for Gonzalez, who is apparently valued at €30 million.

It is believed Spurs could look to bring in a wide player if certain others depart, but Dele Alli seems more likely to leave than Lucas Moura and others, meaning Jose Mourinho may opt against bringing in another winger – rather, he might prefer a central attacking midfielder.

Indeed, with Lucas, Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura all fighting for that third spot alongside Harry Kane and Son Heung-min in the front three, there would be little sense in pursuing a wide forward this month.

Tottenham would be better off waiting until the summer and re-assessing their options in that regard.
