Tottenham are facing the prospect of being without their South American quarter for their trip to Newcastle on Sunday week after their attempts to have them return early were knocked back.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni said: “We are not going to do the same as last time with the Premier League players, under no circumstances,” when asked if Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso could be released before their World Cup qualifier with Peru, which kicks off in the early hours of Friday morning.
Meanwhile, Davinson Sanchez and Emerson Royal are in the same situation with Colombia and Brazilian and are therefore likely to miss the game at St James’ Park.
According to the Evening Standard, Tottenham are “exploring the logistics” to try and get the quarter back into the country in time to be involved against Steve Bruce’s side, but are facing a race against time.
Should they fail to return in, it’ll be the second occasion this has occurred after Romero, Sanchez and Lo Celso missed the games with Chelsea and Rennes last month after having to travel to Croatia for 10 days to avoid quarantining.
