Aston Villa want to sign on-loan midfielder Josh Onomah permanently from Tottenham, according to Birmingham Mail.

The 20-year-old joined Villa on a season-long loan in August. He has made 16 appearances so far, scoring twice.

Spurs initially had high hopes for Onomah, seeing him as the next player from the academy to eventually become a first team regular.

But Mauricio Pochettino allowed him to leave on loan in the summer when it became clear he wouldn’t get enough game time.

Birmingham Mail suggests Villa don’t have the funds to buy him in January, but they could make a move for him at the end of the season if they are promoted to the Premier League.

  1. If we buy Barkley I can’t see Onomah making it at Spurs. We will have Winks, Wanyama, Barkley (for the time being Dembele and Sissoko) as well as genuine class like Oliver Skipp coming through who will all lay claim to those two midfield spots.

  2. The issue will at best be one of whether we want to keep him rather than whether he wants to go; who would want the current Aston Villa against the current Spurs if he was good enough?

  3. I can see us keeping him even if we do sign Barkley, Dembele has maybe 2 seasons in him. Sissoko will probably be gone in the summer as he’s getting on now and Levy will want to make as much back on him as possible. That means there are 2 spaces up for grabs.
