Barcelona are monitoring the situation of Toby Alderweireld and could move for the Tottenham man this summer, according to the Independent.

Last week, reports emerged claiming contract talks between Spurs and Alderweireld had broken down.

The defender is believed to currently earn around £50,000-a-week – Harry Kane is the club’s top earner on £110,000-a-week.

Spurs are said to have offered Alderweireld £110,000-a-week plus bonuses, but the Belgian wants a basic weekly salary of £150,000.

Tottenham are apparently unwilling to meet those demands, and as a result Alderweireld could be sold at the end of the season.

Mauricio Pochettino is thought to have backed the club’s decision and would be happy to spend the money on new recruits.

Since those reports, a number of clubs have been linked with Alderweireld, including Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Now, the Independent claims Barcelona are keeping an eye on the situation.

The story also suggests Manchester United are reluctant to deal with Spurs Daniel Levy, which could increase Barcelona’s chances of sealing a deal for Alderweireld.

Despite fitness and form issues this season, I think Tottenham should be doing everything possible to keep hold of Alderweireld.

But if the club is to sell him, hopefully he moves overseas so that Spurs’ Premier League rivals aren’t strengthened.
