Ajax defender and alleged Tottenham target Matthijs de Ligt has told his current club he wants to leave this summer, according to reports in the Netherlands.

De Ligt has been a sensation since breaking into the Ajax first team at the age of 16 – he is also a full Holland international.

Now 19, the centre-back is believed to be attracting interest from Spurs, who are reportedly among the frontrunners to sign him.

Tottenham apparently want De Ligt as a replacement for Toby Alderweireld, who is expected to leave at the end of the season.

Dutch outlet De Telegraaf claims De Ligt has now informed Ajax directors Edwin van der Saar and Marc Overmars that whe wants a summer transfer.

What’s more, the report suggests Spurs will face competition from Manchester City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich for De Ligt’s signature.

Those clubs will certainly make it difficult for Tottenham to attract the teenager.

However, De Ligt will arguably have a better chance of playing first-team football if chooses Spurs.

Mauricio Pochettino is renowned for putting his faith in youth – whether that will be a factor remains to be seen.
