It looks likely to be all change between the posts for next season with both Carlo Cudicini and Stipe Pletikosa set to leave the club in the summer.

Pletikosa was signed on a season long loan from Spartak Moscow and maybe everyone thought that Carlo wouldn’t recover quite so well as he has from his motorbike accident. In the end, Stipe played just one game against Arsenal in the Carling Cup, but at least it’s a longer career Spurs career than Cesar Sanchez!

Speaking in the press, he had this to say about his future: “If the coach promises to give me a chance, perhaps there will be a point in staying. I made the wrong decision to come here.’
”

The departures could see Ben Alnwick promoted back to number three, with the big question being whether Gomes will be our number one or number two ‘keeper next season. As for Pletikosa, he has a good pedrigree even though he seems to have lost form at Spartak. With Gomes’ claim to the jersey looking about as secure as his hold on Lampard’s free kick, should we have given Stipe a chance?

  1. The article kind of answers itself really. Gomes is probably the best reaction keeper I have ever seen in the modern game taking into account the game has changed so much with fitter athletes faster lighter balls, yes as a reaction shot stopper he’s right up there with the best but his all round game is poor take the game at the Emirates when Samir Nasri scored he dithered on wether or not to come for the ball had he done as he had initially then Nasri could never have scored that goal as he would have been closed down but really would he? Gomes also let’s himself down when he comes for the ball in one on one type situations resulting in penalties going against us. I think maybe the lack of good competition for the goalkeepers jersey has also not helped look at Shay Given not had a look in because Hart is so consistent since we peppered their goal back on the first day of this current season and he kept a clean sheet. Definitely he’s a good keeper when he’s good he’s great but when he’s not he’s rotten. Yeah a new high profile face to challenge him for the number one spot is what’s needed here and maybe blood Ben Alnwick in early rounds of cup games. Hard to know who we go for though Robbo back maybe?

  2. THERE MUST BE A CHANGE OF THE NUMBER ONE FOR NEXT SEASON , AND FOR THE KEEPERS THAT HAVE BEEN MENTIONED I WOULD GO FOR GIVEN THE GUY IS TOTALLY FOCUSED WHEN CALLED UPON .

  3. Shay Given or Ben Foster. Also maybe look to the MLS for a super fit keeper with great reflexes and save a few bob. Howard and Freidel are excellent examples. Agree with a lot of what Lillywhite says above but we just can’t afford to take a chance with another season with Gomes. Sometimes the best keeper in the world, sometimes the worst.
