Clint Dempsey had won over very few fans in the weeks following his deadline day transfer and some were even predicting a very short stay for the American international at White Hart Lane. Even after his goal at Old Trafford had sealed the first Spurs win on that ground since 1989, many were unconvinced.
Stats were thrown around claiming that the player covered more blades of grass during a game than anyone else but was endless running alone having any effect?
There seems to have been something of a turnaround in Clint’s performances and Saturday’s double strike against Coventry had earned him the Man of the Match award from fans voting on the club website. That made it four goals in seven – a far better return even if three had come against weaker opposition including a wicked deflection in the Reading game that even John Motson managed to spot eventually.
As for the player himself, Dempsey was confident enough to speak up about the club’s chances of challenging Manchester City for second place while at the same time, he was happy to talk up the improvement in his stats.
“My season is going OK. I’ve got six goals and I think five assists in all competitions now, so it’s starting to look better,” Dempsey said.
“I’m someone who likes to score or get assists so it’s good to be getting those stats up, contributing and trying to help this team do well. It’s going well but I still want to be better at what I’m doing.”
As Lewis Holtby prepares to join a very overcrowded midfield, we could see some departures from the club either now or in the summer. As for Clint Dempsey, he could turn into a White Hart Lane favourite or alternatively, if we don’t win at Old Trafford for another 23 years he will feature as the answer to the question – ‘who scored the last time Spurs won at United’ some time in 2035.

I agree when he first came he was slow sluggish and looked awful but the last few games he has really come into his own and has been one of our best players week in week out.

When he first came in, he had no pre-season and was being asked to do a completely new role in a team in transition.
A handy squad player, and, like VDV, still being classified solely as a midfeilder by some. He’s not, he’s an attacking player, who takes up what would previously have been one of the striking roles, and also versatile enough to lpay up front and even out wide. There will be other, true midfielders, to make way from the ‘congested’ midfield before him, IMHO.
he had absolutely no training in the summer so when he arrived it was a bit of a surprise to see him in the line-up. With squad rotation Dempsey is a great player. Am, Lm, Rm and even Striker if needed. as a squad that plays 4-3-3 we would need 8 attacking players. 2 St, 2 Lf, 2 Rf, and 2 cf/am. With Defoe, Bale, Lennon, Siggurdson, Holtby, Dempsey and Adebayor we have 7. of course Dembele might be very effective further forward but I think he’ll be a cm. Townsend and Kane add two more options. If we get Damiao, Zaha and/or Willian then we will be overcrowded. but I would be happier to see Adebayor head out then the solid pro Dempsey. I can only see Dempsey going if we get both of Damiao and Willian. He has a great attitude.
I am still not convinced. Our midfield is not overcrowded, we only have one left winger (Bale), but Holtby can play there. Dempsey is good as a sub/impact player to make a (lucky) goal, but nothing more. Sigurdson is not yet what he was at Swansea and maybe he is not that good after all. Only Dembélé has proven to be good enough, we almost never won without him. So yes, Holtby can better start at WHL in January. If we can get a decent price, I would sell Livermore, Huddlestone and Ade to buy a real top class striker (or two) this month.
I agree with Declan, Dempsey provides fantastic versatility. Yes he had a slow start but as mentioned that was lack of pre-season training. For me roaming behind the strikers is his best position.
