Much has been made of Zinedine Zidane’s comments concerning Gareth Bale but does it really mean that Real Madrid are finally set to test Tottenham’s resolve with a bid for the Welshman? Zidane admitted that Bale was the player who had impressed him most over the course of this season.

“This year the player who’s impressed me most is not actually playing in the Champions League,” said the former French international midfielder.

“He’s playing in “the other cup” and that’s Bale. He’s unique.

“He makes things look easy, his pace is frightening, his acceleration is unbelievable because of his ability to go through the gears in very little space.”

Zidane also offered his opinion as to whether Gareth was up there with the likes of Ronaldo and Messi.

“He’s perhaps not quite at the level of the other two but he’s different.

“So, personally I don’t think he’s far off.”

Those comments first appeared in The Sun and as Real’s Director of Football, it’s natural that they have sparked a host of rumours but can we genuinely read that much into them or is Zidane merely expressing a personal opinion?
