If you were to believe the transfer rumour mills this morning then Spurs could have four Belgian Internationals playing at the Lane next season. Along with Christian Benteke there is a strong, if fairly isolated suggestion that Tottenham could be preparing a bid for Zenit St Petersburg’s experienced defender Nicolas Lombaerts.

Voted the best overseas player in the Russian Premier League last season, Lombaerts is 28 and like Jan Vertonghen is comfortable at left back, or on the left side of central defence. He has been with his current club since 2007 and to date has earned a relatively modest 21 caps for the full Belgian national side.

The link appears to have started in the Russian Sports Newspaper Izvestia which claims that Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas has expressed interest in Lombaerts as he looks to strengthen his defence for next season. The crucial part of the story is that the player has just one year left to go on his contract and while he isn’t a first team regular at Zenit, this could be the time that the Russian giants cash out.
