Those famous Sky ‘sources’ have claimed that Daniel Levy is in Madrid negotiating the transfer of Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgian central defender has long been linked with a move to Spurs, as the club looks to strengthen a position where we were weak last season. Yet it looks like there will be competition from Southampton, where Alderweireld has just spent an impressive campaign on loan. Here’s how Twitter reacted to the news.
BREAKING: Sky Sources: Tottenham to hold talks with Atletico Madrid over move for Toby Alderweireld. #SSNHQ

Don't mess it up, Daniel. Toby Alderweireld would be our signing of the summer if we pull it off.

Couldn't foresee Levy going out to Spain to agree fee unless his agent his indicted that the player wants to come to us. #Alderweireld #THFC

Koeman on Alderweireld: "The player likes to stay, we like to keep the player but it’s a little difficult… I have good hope he will stay"

The choice for Alderweireld is simple: sign for the better club and play with your best friend or sign for a club that endorses incest

Alderweireld has to choose Spurs over Southampton , ex team mates, national team mates, London, fans oh god if he chooses them
— Adam (@AdamHillier16) July 2, 2015
Most people seem to forget Alderweireld played with Eriksen at Ajax. Could be a decisive factor.

I must admit should Spurs sign Alderweireld it will be nice to see a player join that you know is going to go straight into the first-team.

Alderweireld would a very good solid addition to our defence but it is getting to the point where Spurs fans are starting to overrate him.
— Ross. (@RossTweeting) July 2, 2015
If we miss out on Alderweireld to Southampton then it will clearly indicate where we stand as a club for at least another four years.

Surely a striker, winger and holding midfielder are more urgent than another centre half; also we could have signed him on previous occasions.I for one cannot make out our transfer policy especially after MP said that he wanted to do his transfer business early this summer; no doubt another Tottenham lie. Can’t understand why we didn’t buy Andre Ayew from Marseille or Konoplyanka from Kiev- both free transfers, now that is just down Daniel Levy’s street or perhaps he wanted them to pay Tottenham for the privilege of playing for them….
Whilst he was be a fantastic signing for us and slip straight into the first 11, the fact that we are only targeting him now points to a chaotic transfer strategy. Surely it was obvious last summer that he would be a perfect pairing with Verthongen? Was Levy and our scouting team utterly stupid? Instead of wasting money on Chiriches and Fazio we should have nailed Toby last summer, even on a loan with an option to buy. We already had some of his ex team-mates as one twitter post mentions, it really was a no-brainer. Now if we get him we’re going to be over strength in CB’s, talk about from one extreme to the other. Levy runs a chaotic ship.
Delboy – We need Toby because we had one of the worst defensive records in the EPL last season. Get him and then go for James McCarthy. He would be our defensive linchpin and thus allow Bentaleb to advance further up the pitch where I think he would be most effective.
COYS!
I think without him, we still look weak in defence. Kaboul must be on the way out, Chiriches doesn’t seem like he is trusted, only as a backup right back and we have just signed Trippier. Fazio could be our main back up option with Dier and Vertonghen as starters. If we get Alderweireld, he will start. I can see 2 out of 3 of Kaboul/Chiriches/Fazio being sold. Especially with Velkjovic and Carter-Vickers both performing well in internationals this summer. If we can steady the ship a little and finish 5th-7th for the next couple of seasons using the youth system a lot, then I would be quite happy. We could start to pay off the new stadium and then when it is complete and paid off, when can start thinking about investing again. I hate to say it but Arsenal are our example at the moment.
I really hope that Southampton pip Tottenham to the signature of Alderweireld. Tottenham may be better placed financially to offer a higher wage than Southampton but the reality is it would be a sideways step. Perhaps Tottenham have a bigger reputation but Southampton are a club on the up rather that Tottenham who stagnate year on year in the Europa league positions. Alderweireld has sad that he loves Southampton and Southampton want him. So come on Les Reed get the signing done in the bag.
Do u think a player would ever go form Spurs to Southampton…be like swapping your really fit girlfriend for the pig next door
Southmapton are way to small for a player of that calibre……punching well above their weight.
I think we should nickname Daniel Levy Usain Bolt, as like him, if Spurs are “in a race” to sign a player,he will always be the hot favourite to win it…
I’m getting the feeling here Alderweireld may not actually care which team he plays for. Don’t get the sense that Tottenham is his preferred choice. This feeling is coming from the various articles thrown out on to the Internet. Of course, I would like him to sign for us because I feel he’s a quality player. Like some of you, I would rather be hearing of negotiations going on for one quality strike and quality wingers. Really like our youth prospects and hope one or two can stand out for our first team. It’s time to make men out of some these boys. COYS!
