Ryan Mason may not have been awarded the Sky man-of-the-match award for his performance against Sunderland, but he was rated as the star man by readers of TottenhamBlog.

Mason was awarded an 8.3 rating by Spurs fans, edging out Eric Dier who scored 7.9. It was Dier who Sky declared as Tottenham’s best player and he was instrumental in Mason’s performance.

Mason often looked unsuited to the defensive responsibilities that came when he was paired with Nabil Bentaleb last season. Neither is a natural holding player and with both of the youngsters playing their first full season in the Premier League, they sometimes struggled to deal with runners from opposing midfielders.

Against Sunderland the presence of Eric Dier allowed Mason to concentrate on attacking and it resulted in what was probably his best performance since making his full debut.

This video shows Mason’s contributions during the match and it really highlights how impressive his passing was. Having got injured when scoring the winning goal, we can only hope that Mason and Dier will soon be reunited in the Tottenham midfield.

  1. This highlights prove exactly what I thought. He scored a fantastic goal but everything else was very obvious hence why we created nothing. He just is not good enough
