Tottenham defender Ben Davies has said he wished a hole in the ground “would swallow me up” when Wales lost to England at Euro 2016.

Daniel Sturridge scored a last minute winner as the Three Lions came from a goal down to beat Wales in the group stages of the competition.

Wales would go on to be one of the surprise hits at Euro 2016, reaching the semi-finals only to lose to eventual winners Portugal.

Meanwhile, England infamously lost to Iceland in the Round of 16, returning home embarrassed.

But Davies, who played against his Tottenham teammates Harry Kane, Eric Dier and Dele Alli on the day, has revealed losing to England was a tough moment.

In a Q&A with Spurs’ official website, the Welshman was asked if he has ever wished he was somewhere else.

He said: “There are always times where you think ‘I could just do with being somewhere on a beach right now’ but I’d say no, not really, I’m pretty content.

“I guess the one for me in terms of football would be when we lost to England at Euro 2016, when England scored in the last minute. If there was a hole in the ground at that moment, I might have hoped it would swallow me up.”

Davies has struggled for form so far this season but continues to be a useful option to rotate with Danny Rose at left-back.

The 25-year-old is likely to start for Tottenham against Chelsea in a London derby at Wembley this weekend.
