Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are leading the race to sign Ajax star Donny van de Beek, according to reports in Italy.

Earlier this month, we relayed reports suggesting Spurs have held talks with the representatives of Van de Beek over a possible move to north London.

Since then Inter Milan have emerged as contenders to sign the midfielder who scored against Tottenham in the Champions League semi-final first leg, one of his 17 goals across all competitions in 2018/19.

But Italian outlet Calcio Mercato claims Spurs and Manchester United have jumped ahead of Inter in the battle for Van de Beek.

Ajax will apparently demand around £45 million for the 22-year-old, and Inter are said to be unwilling to meet his asking price.

Tottenham, on the other hand, look set to spend big this summer having reportedly been told to pay £63 million for Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.

Whether there will be enough money left in the back to sign Van de Beek if Spurs do agree a deal for Ndombele remains to be seen.

A defensive midfielder is more of a priority, but Van de Beek would undoubtedly strengthen the squad.
