Tottenham chief scout Steve Hitchen is keeping a close eye on Borussia Monchengladbach star Denis Zakaria, according to Sky Sports.

Zakaria has made 16 appearances across all competitions for Monchengladbach this season, scoring one goal.

Sky Sports claims Hitchen has been tracking the 22-year-old ever since he moved to the Bundesliga from Swiss side Young Boys in the summer of 2017.

Mauricio Pochettino is said to have asked Hitchen for regular updates, which could be a promising sign – it’s always a positive when targets are personally wanted by the manager.

Zakaria, a Switzerland international, is believed to be one of many potential replacements for Mousa Dembele identified by Spurs.

Dembele is set to leave for the Chinese Super League and Tottenham are expected to recruit a long-term replacement either this month or in the summer.

Hoffenheim midfielder Florian Grillitsch has also been linked with a move to north London, and reports suggest Spurs still haven’t given up in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain contract rebel Adrien Rabiot.

Tottenham may well be priced out of getting any of those players this month – the summer window is likely to be more active.
